This was a really interesting collection of short stories. They're generally about queer and genderqueer people in the south. Many of the locations were familiar to me, including one story that touched on Jamestown and Williamsburg Virginia, where I went to college.
The range was both a plus and a minus: I liked the vastly different time periods and topics, but the writing style itself changed so much between stories that it made the collection slower and less satisfying to read.
That Drowning Place had some experimental storytelling in which part of the story was told by a community as a whole - while The Daring Life of Phillipa The Rogue wove together letters, news stories, and time periods. I appreciated the ideas that were in play, but didn't really need the whipsawing style.
Bump and Lightning Man were highlights for me. I thought that overall the subject matter was treated really well, and I learned a few things about identity, sexuality, and southern life while reading it.
