I read Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green on

Review

Tuberculosis is a very good subject for a book, and Green writes about the history, biology, and politics of the disease in a pretty engaging way.

This book suffers from the "chapter as essay" problem that I also encountered in Super Pumped. It intertwines too much, reintroducing and reexplaining concepts so often that it's both disjointed and a little repetitive.

It also has a pretty unsatisfying view of the treatment problem. At the very end, Green summarizes that the cause of tuberculosis is cultural, political, and economic, not principally biological. Probably most readers will agree with him on that point, but he summarizes this problem as us - that we are the cause of tuberculosis. And this is frustrating: are the nation-states and drug companies "us"? Does the average person really bear responsibility for the disease persisting, and has that even been something they've had the chance to vote on?

It was decent otherwise and was an enjoyable audiobook for a long ride.
